Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov called Tuesday on the children not to kill sparrows with slings.
The rather odd appeal was made at the opening of the initiative "My Green City".
The organizers said a total of 68 bird species could be seen in the capital city and all of them should be protected in some way.
Joining the project, the mayor himself placed two feed ing-throughs in the central garden, located between the Parliament and Sofia University buildings.
Such facilities will be placed throughout Sofia and will be regularly supplied with grain and other bird titbits.
