Bulgaria's Varna Municipality and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) have signed a memorandum for cooperation, the local newpaper Narodno Delo reported Tuesday.

The memorandum was signed in CERN's laboratory located on the France-Switzerland border by the Chair of Varna's City Council Borislav Gutsanov, and the CERN Secretary General Maximilian Metzger.

The agreement envisages the setting up by CERN of a physics laboratory in Varna's "Nicolaus Copernicus" People's Astronomy Observatory and Planetarium.

It also will create opportunities for Bulgarian students of physics to be trained in CERN's research center, and for high-tech firms from Varna to participate in the production of some of the devices needed for its work.

With funding from Varna's City Council thirty-three high school teachers from the city recently spent a week in CERN's center, where they were trained in Bulgarian.

Varna's Deputy Mayor, who is in charge of education, Kosta Bazitov stated the municipal administration was going to allocate funding for its mutual projects with CERN in its 2009 budget, including for its program from training at CERN's laboratory.
