Overpopulation of Veined Rapa Whelks Threatens Black Sea Life

Society | October 1, 2008, Wednesday // 00:00

The population of the veined rapa whelks has considerably increased as it now threatens the life in the Black Sea, the Fish Products Producers' Association announced Wednesday.

The bottom predator has no natural enemies, which allows it to eat the black Black Sea mollusk, which is one of the main bio-filters as well as the white sand mollusk.

The association proposed that the rapa whelks and the white mollusks should be fished by special facilities used in many EU member states.

The experiment is to prove such activities would not destruct the biodiversity.

Bulgaria exports the meat of the veined rapa whelks to the Asian markets.
