Bulgarian pensioners staged Wednesday a rally across Sofia to express demands over crafting a law to guarantee them more important role in the public and political life of the country.

The event was organized on the occasion of the International Day of the Elderly People.

The rally passed in the central Vitosha Boulevard to reach the square between the Presidency and the Council of Ministers' building.

There, the elderly people made a statement addressing the President Georgi Parvanov and the Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.

"The prices in Bulgaria are the same as in the other EU member states while the payment is 12 times lower. That is why we demand that the minimal salary reaches BGN 800 in the next year and the value of the minimal pension be set at BGN 400," the pensioners said.

They insisted also that the national media air a one-hour program dedicated to the elders.
