Uproar in Bulgarian Schools over PM's Speech for First School Day

Some Bulgarian teachers have expressed their concern over Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev's decision to welcome all students with a speech on September 15, the day when the school year starts in the country.

Stanishev's speech will be distributed to all school principals in the morning on September 15 through email, and will then be read to students during the official celebrations for the opening of the school year.

The principals are obliged to read the PM's statement by a special order of the Deputy Minister of Education Kircho Atanassov.

A number of teachers from around the country have raised their concerns that the PM's speech would not be appropriate for the occasion, and that the traditional speech by the Minister of Education should be included in the program instead.

Some of the principals are concerned that the statement would overburden the traditional ritual and are considering other ways of conveying it to the students including posting it on the posting boards, or having the teachers read it to each individual class.

The statement is believed to include special remarks about the 100th anniversary since the declaration of Bulgaria's national independence from the Ottoman Turkish Empire, on September 22, 1908.
