The Chair of the Bulgarian Doctors' Union Andrey Kehayov announced Friday in the northeast city of Razgrad that almost half of all medical specialists in the country were very close to the retiring age.

"We might have to start importing doctors from abroad", Kehayov said explaining that the doctors in Bulgaria under 30 years of age were only 1000, whereas those over 50 were about 10 000.

In his words, because of the lack of funding for pre-hospital care, a large number of the young Bulgarian medical specialists either became distributors of medications, or left the country.

Some 600 Bulgarian doctors found employment elsewhere in the EU over the last twelve months.
