Sofia's waste would be transported abroad in case all Bulgarian municipalities refuse to take it into their local landfills, according to the Deputy Environmental Minster Chavdar Georgiev.

The Environmental Ministry calculations show that the decontaminating of 1 ton of waste to be burnt in recycling plants in Austria or Germany would cost about EUR 200.

Georgiev explained that sending the city's waste abroad was considered an extreme measure to be applied only if all other solutions failed, adding that the use of the landfill in the Sofia Suhodol district was only a temporary one.

"I think that it was only logical to use the remaining capacity of the Suhodol landfill; the landfill corresponds to the ecological requirements and has been issued a complex permit - so we had to use its entire remaining capacity in order to avoid the crisis waste situation Sofia was facing," the Deputy Environmental Minister stated Tuesday.

Georgiev also spoke about the troubled steel mill "Kremikovtzi" and said that the mill would have to close down some of its installations even in case a complex permit was issued since those installations did not comply with ecological requirements.
