Bulgaria Gas Field Burning for Over 24 Hours

A serious fire is burning for over 24 hours now in the natural gas field near the northern Bulgarian town of Durankulak, located close to the Bulgarian-Romanian border.

The fire broke around 12:30 pm on Monday and is the first such fire in the area, according to the Dimcho Simeonov, Chief of the Local Fire Company.

Three fire trucks and 30 firefighters have been trying to extinguish the fire for over 24 hours, assisted by experts of extinguishing drilling fires, who have arrived from the city of Pleven.

Local authorities are currently discussing a plan to close the drill area.

The Mayor of Shabla, Krasimir Krastev has stated before Darik radio that the fire was under control and there was no danger that it would spread out. The Mayor further explained that water was also poured over the drill equipment in order to prevent damages.
