The Vice President of the European Commission GГјnter Verheugen said Wednesday he believed Bulgaria could make a significant contribution to the position of the EU on the conflict in Georgia.
"Now it becomes clear Bulgaria's accession to the EU was the right choice. Bulgaria is extremely useful for us with its contacts in the Black Sea region", Verheugen said after his talks with Bulgaria's PM Stanishev and the President Parvanov on the regional problems with Turkey, Russia, Georgia, and the Ukraine.
In his words, the Caucasus and the Black Sea regions were especially for the economic stability of the European Union, but that stability could not be achieved without talks with Russia.
On September 1 Bulgaria's PM Stanishev will take part in the emergency meeting of the leaders of the 27 EU member states in order to discuss the Union's common position on the crisis in Georgia.
