Starting Thursday gendarmes are going to be deployed on main Bulgarian roads and highways along with regular traffic patrols on duty, according to an order issued by the Bulgarian Interior Ministry General Secretary.
Pavlin Dimitrov has issued the order because there is a great need of reducing the number of the heavy traffic incidents during the summer months, which are traditionally the deadliest in Bulgaria.
Just overnight a total of 17 serious traffic accidents have occurred in Bulgaria claiming the lives of 3 people and sending 20 to the hospitals with injuries, according to the Interior Ministry's press-center.
3 of the injured are in critical condition.
In the capital Sofia alone, the number of traffic accidents during last 24 hours reached 160, including two major car crashes, which left two dead and one injured.
The number of the Bulgarians, who died on roads across the country since the beginning of the year is already over 620 while over 6,000, have been injured in accidents during the same period.
