Varna Terrarium Burns Down

Society | August 11, 2008, Monday // 00:00

A fire that broke around 3:30 am Monday morning had fully destroyed the terrarium in the city of Varna, while the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Many of the animals housed at the terrarium have died including the rare Savannah lizard.

Varna fire fighters have arrived at the scene immediately after the call has been received, but could not extinguish the two-story building, which burned down in a matter of minutes.

The majority of the reptiles have died and many have been hurt by the dense smoke.

According to the terrarium owner Rostislav Trayanov, the crocodile had also suffered severe burns and its life was in danger.

Trayanov does not think that this has been an arson incident.

The building had security guards round the clock and the fire had started at the lower level.

The surviving reptiles would be cared for by volunteers at the terrarium.
