An 85-millimeter shell that has not exploded during the July 3 blast at the military warehouse near Chelopechene had been safely detonated Wednesday as Darik radio reports.
The announcement was made by Colonel Valentin Radev, Munitions Expert at the Bulgarian Defense Ministry.
The shell had been planted in the ground and had been detonated on the spot at 12:30 pm as part of the action for the controlled detonation of munitions that have not exploded during the blasts.
The action began Wednesday. The next controlled detonation in Chelopechene is scheduled for Friday between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
According to Radev, about 1,000 unexploded munitions have been discovered so far on an area of 2 to 4 kilometers from the blasts' epicenter. The action for their controlled detonation was going to last nearly two years.
Radev further explained that the unexploded munitions are located on farmlands, with very close proximity to heavily traveled roads. According to the Colonel some 300 to 400 to them are of highest caliber than the shell that has been detonated today.
