World's First In Vitro Conceived Girl Arrives in Bulgaria

Louise Joy Brown, the world's first baby to be conceived by in vitro fertilisation, arrived to Sofia on Sunday to take part in a series of events, organized on the occasion of her 30th anniversary.

The special guest is accompanied by her mother Lesley Brown, husband Wesley Mullinder and 18-month-old son Cameron.

The family holds their visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of "I Want a Baby" Foundation.

On Monday, the foundation organizes a symposium, where the demographic problems in Bulgaria will be discussed.

Louise Joy Brown was born on July 25, 1978, in Oldham, England after her mother had been trying to conceive for nine years, but without success.

On November 10, 1977, Lesley Brown underwent the procedure by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards.

Although the Browns knew the procedure was experimental, the doctors did not tell them that no case had yet resulted in a baby.

Four years later, the family was happy to see their second daughter, Natalie, who was also conceived through IVF and became the world's fortieth IVF baby, and the first one to give birth herself naturally in 1999.
