The Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office has submitted to the Court five claims to terminate the activities of five religious organizations in Bulgaria because they have been preaching contrary to the law.

The news was announced by the Prosecutor's Office press-center. The claims have been submitted as result of materials published in Bulgarian media.

The Prosecutor's Office has established that by September 30, 2007 as required by the Law for the Religion, 94 nontraditional religious organizations including Christian, Muslim and Buddhist ones have been registered in Bulgaria.

However, according to unofficial data, this number reaches well over 100 with over 418 local sections conducting activities in Bulgaria often undercover as registered non-profit foundations or businesses.

Religious goals are not included in the statues of those organizations, but they are often disguised as humanitarian or educational activities.

This is why the claims to terminate the activities of the "Faith" Foundation and the Association "Union of Muslims in Bulgaria" have been submitted to Sofia's District Court. In addition such claims have been submitted to the Courts in Bourgas, Smolyan and Plovdiv respectively for the "Charitable Projects" Foundation, the Association "Alliance for Islamic Development and Culture" and the "Gunesh 2004" company.

The Deputy Chief Prosecutor has submitted a proposal to the Education Minister to undertake the measures provided under the law. At the same time Regional Prosecutor's Offices are checking the intense construction of many new prayer homes, temples and other religious buildings.

The Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office has instructed the Regional ones to initiate legal proceedings against individuals when there is enough evidence that crimes have been committed related to the prohibition to dissipate and propagandize fascist or other undemocratic ideologies or forcible changes in the constitutional order in Bulgaria, to organize criminal groups to conduct such activities, to initiate violence against individuals due to their nationality, faith or religion and other violations.
