Four downtown districts of Bulgaria's capital Sofia are buried in trash on Wednesday as the concessionaire firm has not removed any of the garbage there since Saturday because it is allegedly short of workers.

The Novera Firm announced Wednesday morning it could not handle the situation in the quarters of Oborishte, Vazrazhdane, Sredetz, and Triaditsa.

This led Sofia Municipality to ask four other firms dealing with similar waste disposal activities to step in as an emergency measure.

The Director of the Sofia Inspectorate Veska Georgieva announced Novera would be fined at least BGN 50 000 for failing to perform its duties.

Later representatives of the concessionaire explained they always had issues with labor shortage in the summer months as many of the workers quit to start working in construction where the wages were higher.

The Sofia Municipality has promised to dispose of the large piles of trash, which have already started to emit a bad odor, as soon as possible.
