The airport in the second largest Bulgarian city of Plovdiv is ready to accommodate all planes unable to land in Sofia as the Sofia Airport had been closed since 6:50 am because of the explosions at the military munitions storehouse in the Chelopechene quarter.
The readiness to accommodate the capital's air traffic was expressed by the Deputy Director of the Plovdiv Airport Plamen Nikolov before the private Darik Radio.
The initial order, which stated that the Sofia Airport would be closed until 9:30 am, had been extended until 2:30 pm on Thursday because the sporadic explosions in Chelopechene are still continuing.
Representatives of the Sofia Airport administration stated, however, that the airport might be opened earlier as the cloud caused by the explosions was 13 km away, and did not pose a great danger to the air traffic.
Yet, most of the flights scheduled to arrive in Sofia at the busiest time - between 1 pm and 5 pm - will likely be redirected to Plovdiv, and even to the Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas.
