About 1 500 tons of ammunition are stored in the military facilities near the Sofia district of Chelopechene, authorities said.

There are also 15 tons of TNT in the storehouses, that were rocked by a huge explosion on Thursday morning.

Most of the people living within 6 km of the military storehouse, which exploded around 6:45 am had been evacuated.

The Bulgarian Minister of Emergency Situations Emel Etem explained the evacuation was necessitated by the possibility for new detonations, and the danger that flying parts of the munitions stored at the military site might cause damage to the buildings within the threatened area.
