Sofia Has 35 Brand New Mercedes Buses: Sofia Has 35 Brand New Mercedes Buses Sofia's Mayor Boyko Borisov officially received and put in operation Tuesday 35 new "Mercedes" buses acquired by the Municipal Association "Capital Public Transportation" Photo by Kamelyia Atansova (Sofia Photo Agency)

There is a strong possibility that by the end of 2008, the old "Ikarus" buses currently servicing public transportation in Sofia would be removed and replaced by new ones, according to a statement made Sofia's Mayor Boyko Borisov.

Borisov made the announcement Tuesday after officially receiving and putting in operation 35 new "Mercedes" buses acquired by the Municipal Association "Capital Public Transportation".

The new buses will serve exclusively the 111-bus line, which is managed by the Association through a private company.

If the necessary funds could be allocated within the budget, the project to install video cameras on public transportation vehicles would continue a swell. The video camera experiment on the 280-bus line had shown good results and had significantly reduced acts of vandalism.

According to Borisov, so far this year, together with private carriers, the Municipality had introduced 160 brand new, highest class buses, equipped for handicapped people.

The new 35 "Mercedes" buses have been manufactured in Europe in 2005 and 2006 and have electronic displays of bus lines and the bus schedules.

"We are hoping that our drivers would keep the buses clean and in good condition, would adhere to the bus schedule, we certainly hope that football fans would not vandalize them during football games because as you see - those buses are real jewels. So, as I promised, the price of tickets would go up only when the majority of Sofia's buses become brand new ones. We plan to acquire more buses for the municipality by revising the budget and by working together with private carriers, with those purchasing brand new buses, not second hand ones. So, I think that this way, by the end of the year, the 30-40 years old "Ikaruses" currently running in Sofia would disappear," Borisov stated.
