The Bulgarian Minister of State Administration Nikolay Vasilev the Ilinden Checkpoint at the Bulgarian-Greek border was going to be closed down within a month because it was dangerous for the people traveling trough it.

At a special sitting of the Institutional Council on Border Control, Vasilev explained the Ilinden Checkpoint had been working illegally since its opening 2,5 years ago because it did not have the required Title Deed No.16.

The Title Deed No.16 was supposed to be issued by an expert's commission but the Sikonko firm, which build the checkpoint, failed to get it, and that is why it is being sued by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works.

The Institutional Council on Border Control discovered Tuesday that the Ilinden Checkpoint had no working fire safety installation, no working water supply, and that the roofs of its buildings were leaking.

The special sitting of the Council on Border Control was summoned by the District Governor of Blagoevgrad Vladimir Dimitrov to inspect the reported violations at the border checkpoint.

Minister Vasilev warned that the Ministry of Regional Development had one month to fix the problems at Ilinden. If it failed, the checkpoint would be closed.

The Ilinden Checkpoints provides a connection between the Bulgarian town of Gotse Delchev, and the Greek town of Drama. It was opened in 2005 by the Presidents of Bulgaria and Greece after a ten-year old delay.
