If the EC has any doubts it would not accept a project, ever, according to Economy and Energy Minister Petar Dimitrov. Dimitrov commented on the protest rally Tuesday organized by the National Coalition "NPP BeleNe" (No to Belene)

10 or so members of the Coalition demonstrated in front of the Economy and Energy Ministry building. The coalition is against the project to build a second nuclear power plant in Bulgaria - Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) "Belene". According to the Coalition the NPP grounds are a serious seismic risk.

"The experts' conclusions about the seismic risk of the "Belene" grounds have been through strange changes", said Petko Kovachev, Executive Director of the Green Policy Institute, adding that as yearly as the 80's of the last century, experts, after conducting thorough research have recommended that Bulgaria drops the idea of building a NPP on these grounds due to high seismic risk. The report of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1990 also includes similar conclusions.

The Evaluation of the Influence on the Environment report of NPP "Belene" as well as the year long study of the risk, recommended by the National Electricity Company serve investors' interest and will create future problems for the society", stated Kovachev.

Kovachev is firm that "Belene" is located on a crack created by the Danube River and added that the issue with the seismic activity epicenter Vrancha as well as potential earthquakes along with many othe problems have been long ignored.

The "Belene" grounds are also located on top of a swamp, which present yet another risk, according to Kovachev. He also reminded that just a month ago an earthquake was registered in Belene with a 2,5 strength from the Richter' scale.

The Coalition "NPP BeleNe" (No to Belene) have been adamant that the manipulating of the seismic risk information is part of the political decision to build the NPP and had nothing to do with independent and objective research.

The participants in the rally were dressed in neoprene costumes with a "radioactive" sign and were handing brochures to the passers-by.
