High concentration of sulphur dioxide in the southern Bulgarian town of Galabovo was reported Friday for yet another time, the Regional Environment and Waters Inspectorate in Stara Zagora reported.

The pollution monitoring system in the town detected levels of the chemical substance considerably exceeding the permitted threshold 2,68 times.

The allowed average hourly quantity of the poisonous gas was 350 micrograms per cubic meter at noon, whereas the respective value at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the town of Galabovo was 354.577 micrograms per cubic meter.

The local environmental authority issued an order to the three nearby thermal power plants from the Maritza-Iztok Complex to reduce their output so that further pollution could be prevented.

The Galabovo Mayor Nikolay Tonev has recently said the pollution was constant but that the environmental inspectorate recorded it only when the wind blew in the direction of the detection devise.

The Stara Zagora District Governor Mariya Neykova has previously insisted that the BGN 360 000 already collected from the three power plants in the region as fines for the pollution should be invested in environmental projects in the Galabovo Municipality.
