The EU unit for combating frauds OLAF is presently investigating 19 cases of alleged abuse of EU money in Bulgaria, and is considering the potential investigation of 56 cases.
The news was announced Tuesday by the OLAF Spokesman Jorg Wojahn, who declined to give further details about the investigated cases as the unit had no right to provide information about current investigations.
Wojahn said some of the investigations were launched over publications in the Bulgarian press, whereas others were started after information by different Bulgarian institutions had been submitted.
Three of OLAF's cases in Bulgaria have already been completed as either sentences have been issued, or the respective EU money had been returned.
Wojahn admitted OLAF was working more intensively in the newest EU member states Bulgaria and Romania.
