Two applications for the position of the Chair of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) were submitted Friday, which is the first day for nominations, the Chair of the General Assembly of the Academy Stefan Vodenicharov announced.

The nominees are Professor Nikola Sabotinov, which currently chairing BAS temporarily, and Professor Aleksandar Petrov, who is the Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Academy.

More applications are expected to be submitted Monday afternoon after the meeting of the professors and correspondent-members, which is taking place in the morning.

The Elections for the new Chair of BAS will take place on June 18, and before that the candidates need to submit their CVs and programs for the development of the institution.

The early elections are held after the third reelection of Professor Ivan Yuhnovski for Chair sparked heated debate about its legality. The choice was attacked because it violated the requirement that the Chair-elect should be under 70 years of age.

Eventually, Yunovksi himself resigned in mid March paving the way for new elections.
