Bulgaria's First Lady Zorka Parvonova is on a two-day visit to Germany starting Friday, where she will be the patron of Bulgarian participation in the celebration of the Day of St. Methodius in the town of Ellwangen, Baden-Wuertemberg province.

The Commemoration of St. Methodius in Ellwangen, where he was imprisoned for three years, is traditionally attended by representatives of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

St. Methodius was imprisoned in Ellwangen between 870 and 873 as he continued promoting the Glagolitic (early Cyrillic) alphabet among the Slavs in Central Europe, after his brother deceased in Rome in 869.

Methodius after he had been accused of preaching outside of his parish by the Bavarian clergy and was arrested by Ermanrich, the Catholic bishop of Passau.

Methodius was set free after the intervention of Pope John VIII, and was later appointed Archbishop of Moravia and Pannonia. With his death in 885, however, his disciples promoting the Slavic alphabet in what is today's Slovakia and the Czech Republic were chased away and sold in slavery.

The bas-relief of St. Methodius was created in 1885 on the wall of the Old Basilica in Ellwangen. The Day of the Slavic Saint was celebrated for the first time in 1970 at the initiative of the Mayor of the German town, and has become holiday of the town.

A memorial plaque in Bulgarian was placed in the Basilica in 1975, and Bulgarians living in Germany gather at Ellwangen every year to celebrate the day of the one of the creators of the Slavic script.
