The company "Metropolitan" is slated to receive EUR 185 M under the operational program "Transport" for the construction and the extension of Sofia's metro from the "Nadezhda" quarter to the "Lozenets" quarter and from the "Obelya" quarter to the"Mladost" one.

The agreement for the financing of the metro project with European funds has been signed Wednesday in the presence of Transportation Minister Petar Mutafchiev and Sofia's mayor Boiko Borissov.

The municipal company "Metropolitan" is one of the main beneficiaries of the European operational program "Transport" with a share of EUR 185 M from the total EUR 2 B available trough the program.

The mayor stated his certainty that after the completion of the metro project Sofia residents will no longer face traffic and transportation problems.

"Ms. Plugchieva, should she have been invited, would have been very happy since these are EUR 185 M or BGN 379 M", Borissov added.

Transportation Minister Petar Mutafchiev, whose Ministry is overseeing the project's funds promised that the construction of the metro line from the "Nadezhda" quarter to the "Lozenets" quarter is going to begin in months.

"By November, we would be able to secure the contact for the first segment - from "Nadezhda" to "Cherni Vrah" so that we can in reality begin to absorb the funds for the metro project", Mutafchiev said.

The project for the extension of Sofia's metro has a deadline of the end of 2012. A consortium between the French company "Sistra" and the Bulgarian ones "Infraproektconsult" and "Metrooconsult" have been selected as project's consultants.
