President Georgi Parvanov attended the opening of the sixth national convention of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the Rila monastery on Wednesday.

Parvanov gave a speech stating his belief that the gathering will play a major role in strengthening the church's role in the society. The president also spoke about the crucial influence the Orthodox Church played in Bulgarian history.

Bulgaria's Patriarch Maxim opened the meeting of 158 delegates who are to decide on changes in the regulations of the Bulgarian Church.

Some of the changes discussed will allow the church to put out its real estates and lands to lease.

"The church is rich in forest lands, agricultural lands, and real estates that may be given for rent," Vidin Bishop Dometian commented before the Standard newspaper.

"We shall hire specialists to help us in these activities," Dometian added.

The church convention is scheduled to continue until Sunday.
