Bulgaria with Subtropical Climate in Fifty Years

Society | May 15, 2008, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria's climate will become subtropical by 2050-2080 as the average temperatures will increase with 2-5 degrees Celsius in the coming decades.

The information was reported by the Bulgarian National Radio, which cites data of Bulgaria's National Meteorology and Hydrology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The subtropical climate will lead to the extinction of some plant and animal species, and the appearance and spreading of new diseases and pests, which will be resistant to the new conditions.

In this respect, an exhibition dedicated to the issue will be opened Thursday in the Regional History Museum in the southwest city of Blagoevgrad.

The exhibition is entitled "Climate Change - Causes and Possible Solutions". It was set up by Greenpeace as part of its Energy Revolution global project.

Its organizers say the climate change issues were still not a matter of high public concern in Bulgaria.
