Bulgaria's weightlifting champion Galabin Boevski announced Saturday he is to hand in his resignation as a municipal councilor after his son shot at himself with a gas pistol while playing Russian roulette in a classroom.

"I talked to the local parliament Speaker Andrey Ivanov and informed him over my decision," Boevski explained.

Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov, whose party GERB is represented by the weightlifter in the city's council, insisted that the sportsman should give up his post as witnesses claimed injured Paul Boevski was the one to bring the pistol at school.

"It could happen to anyone but as far as I understood Boevski has not reacted as our party's moral requires," the mayor said.

Earlier in the day, Borissov blamed the weightlifter on the case, saying no one but the parents should check what bring the students in their bags before leaving for school.
