The Times: Brussels to Stop EU Money for Bulgaria over Organized Crime

Politics » BULGARIA IN EU | April 10, 2008, Thursday // 00:00

The UK newspaper the Times published Thursday an article about Bulgaria's organized problems suggesting it might be a good idea for the EU to freeze all funding for the country if it fails again to deal with the situation.

The Times points out that once Bulgaria and Romania had been admitted to the EU, it had no major way of forcing the two states to reform.

Yet, the UK paper notes that had it not joined the EU, Bulgaria might have turned back to Russia for support. So the best course of action for the EU would be to demand once again that decisive action be taken to rectify the organized crimes and corruption problems.

The Times stresses that if this last attempt at change failed, this meant Bulgaria was not fit for the EU, and that all EU funds for it must be terminated.
