The Chair of the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED) group in the EU Parliament Joseph Daul warned Wednesday the Bulgarian government that it might face EU sanctions because of its failure to combat corruption and organized crime.
"We are not going to be silent witnesses to the succession of murders in the downtown of a European capital", Daul declares in a statement with respect to the last two assassinations in Sofia.
The crime novels writer Georgi Stoev was killed on Monday, and the energy businessman Borislav Georgiev was murdered on Sunday.
Daul's statement also insists that Bulgaria's Interior and Justice Ministers guarantee the public order, and the security of the Bulgarian citizens.
"We are going to watch closely the activity of the governing parties in Bulgaria, and we will insists on measures, and if necessary on the imposing of sanctions on the Bulgarian government", the EPP-ED Chair's statement concludes.
Meanwhile, the five Bulgarian MEPs from the GERB party, which is led by the Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov, issued a declaration stating that the Bulgarian cabinet was unable to deal with the organized crime and corruption issues, and that it must resign so that early elections could take place.
