The European Union warned Bulgaria that it must take immediate measures in order end the gangster violence in Sofia after the recent murders of important public figures, the British newspaper the Independent reported on Wednesday.
The Independent reminds that the criminal stories writer Georgi Stoev was killed in downtown Sofia on Monday, and that Borislav Georgiev, who is a director of a large energy company was murdered a day earlier before his home.
The UK newspaper points out that over 150 mafia murders have taken place in Bulgaria in the last seven years, as well as a great number of bomb explosions, armed attacks, and arsons, and that the perpetrators are hardly ever brought to justice.
The Independent also explains that Bulgaria's accession to the EU was delayed because of its organized crime and corruption problems, and that the same unresolved issues might soon lead to sanctions such as the termination of EU funding.
