Sofia Municipality plans to open its Museum of History as well as to restore the monument in front of the National Palace of Culture on the occasion of the 130th anniversary since the city has been declared a capital of Bulgaria.
The celebrations, which are to take place on April 3 next year, will also bring 130 trees more planted in the park in front of the palace, Deputy Mayor Yordanka Fandakova announced Friday.
The municipality has already established an initiative committee that will observe the execution of the activities planned. It includes representatives of state and non-governmental organizations, media, businessmen, sportsmen and officials from the sphere of tourism.
"It came the moment when we should make the buildings across the city more beautiful and improve the condition of the streets and the sidewalks," Fandakova explained.
"We could restore the monument in front of the National Palace of Culture, which is now the most shameful spot in Sofia under some conditions and if the municipality allows us to do so," the palace's Director Hristo Drumev said.
The Director of the National Museum of History proposed that the memory of more than 3,000 Sofia citizens should be perpetuated by constructing a monument in the garden behind the palace.
