Smiling Eyes on Bulgaria's Kingdom of Laughter

The town of Gabrovo, located some 220 km north-east from the capital Sofia and known as the biggest kingdom of laughter on earth, is celebrating today the Day of Humour.

April 1st is the Day of Humor, similar to the April Fools' Day, where people try to trick, or cheat, each other by saying or doing things that are not true.

This is a day everyone has to keep their guard up, and count their change following a purchase, as no one is immune from being cheated.

The inhabitants of Gabrovo know this best for they are famous for their thriftiness and unique sense of humour - these are the people who clip the tails of their cats to keep the room warmer and stop their watches at night to save hard wear on the cog-wheels.

The town has seen the birth of many famous inventions to serve frugal people, such as the fashion of narrow trousers and short skirts and the one-stotinka coin.

The town also houses the famous House of Humor and Satire, where thousands of world famous humorists from across the world gather during the biennial Festival of Humor and Satire.

This year the house is celebrating its 36th birthday in a traditionally thrifty fashion - by inviting to its party all Gabrovo citizens born on April 1.

"Laughter has remained the most stable currency of all," the late Radoi Ralin, famous Bulgarian writer and great friend of Gabrovo, wrote, affirming Gabrovtsi belief that "the world lasts because it laughs".

A planet, named after the Bulgarian town of Gabrovo, famous for its residents' legendary sense of humour, is celebrating its thirty-second anniversary since its discovery on April 1.

Interestingly, the planet was first detected by the Russian astronaut Nikolay Chernih on April Fools day on 1976.

Five years later the US Minor Planet Centre officially recognized planet Gabrovo, which enters the list of the solar system, tagged No 2206 spot.

In 1981 the municipality of Gabrovo in advance declared for honourary citizen the man who first steps on the small planet.

The enthusiasts will have to travel no less than three years to reach it.
