A European Commission spokesman has warned that Bulgaria will have to pay money back to Brussels should suspicions for fraud in aid payment absorption prove right.
"Should suspicions of malpractice be confirmed, Bulgaria will have to pay back certain sums," EU agriculture spokesman Michael Mann said in an interview for Deutsche Welle.
Last week the European Commission decided to suspend some farm aid payments to new European Union member Bulgaria over suspected fraud for the first time since it joined the bloc in January 2007.
Meanwhile Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin, who is in Brussels, threw the blame for the investigation on "certain Bulgarian politicians, who prefer to grumble in Brussels, instead of raising the issues in Sofia," Deutsche Welle pointed out.
