Bulgaria's government decided that March 5 would be a day of national mourning for the victims of the deadly fire on a train in northern Bulgaria.

PM Sergey Stanishev called for the extraordinary session of the Cabinet after the nine victims of the blaze were identified and Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev proposed the date of mourning.

The decision came amid a raging controversy as to why the government skipped to declare days of mourning after the tragedy and did not cancel the ceremonies, marking the country's national holiday March 3.

Nine people were charred to death and nine more were injured after two cars of the night train going from Sofia to the northeastern town of Kardam burst into flames minutes after midnight on February 29.
