A fluorescent light-bulb explosion has been blamed for the hellish fire that swept through an overnight train in Bulgaria, leaving eight people dead and another nine injured.

"A fluorescent lamp bulb blew up and set the bed sheets in the sleeping car on fire," 65-year-old Zhechka Krasteva, one of the survivors, explained as she and another ten passengers arrived in the town of Silistra after a 17-hour-old hellish trip from Sofia.

More than 50 people were on board the nine-car train service from the capital Sofia to the north-eastern town of Kardam. The fire erupted near Cherven Bryag, Northern Bulgaria.
