Eight people died after two cars of the night train going from Sofia to the northeastern town of Kardam burst into flames minutes after midnight.

Nine people were also injured in the blaze but doctors assured that their lives are out of danger.

About 60 passengers were on board the nine-car service when fire erupted near the town of Cherven Bryag in Northern Bulgaria. Most of the people were evacuated before the flames could spread, authorities reported

However, rail officials said some passengers had been trapped in the burning sleeping compartments that had their doors locked.

DNA analysis will be needed for the identification of the charred bodies, pathologists said.

Bulgaria's Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev visited the place of the tragedy and the injured people, who are currently in a hospital in Cherven Briag.

Investigation has been launched into the case and the minister commented the reason for the deadly fire is still unknown. According to witnesses a blown up fluorescent light-bulb sparked the flames.
