Iraq, PKK Warn Turkey over Its Kurdistan Offensive

World | February 23, 2008, Saturday // 00:00

The Iraq Foreign Minister Zabari warned Turkey Saturday that any escalation of its military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan border areas could destabilize the whole region.

Zabari also insisted that Turkey's operation against the Kurdish rebel bases in Northern Iraq, which started Thursday, should be as limited as possible and should end as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) threatened to take the war to Turkish cities by carrying out attacks without targeting the civilian population if Turkey did not stop its offensive in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Turkey has lost five soldiers in the operation, which aims to isolate the Kurdish rebels in the Iraqi border regions. According to the press release of the Turkish Army General Staff, about 45 PKK insurgents have been killed so far in the offensive.

Turkey has also been called upon by the US and UN representatives to limit the operation, and to obey international law.
