Serbia plans to stage a mass protest rally in Belgrade on Thursday against the unilateral declaration of independence of the breakaway province of Kosovo.

The protest, largely organized by the government, goes under the slogan "Kosovo is Serbia" and about a million of people are expected to gather in the capital.

Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, as well as world-famous movie director Emir Kusturica are expected to address the protesters, as President Boris Tadic goes on an official visit to Romania and will not be among the citizens.

Numerous protests have been staged since Sunday's independence declaration with Kosovo Serbs living in enclaves in the province also organizing massive demonstrations.

On Tuesday, NATO peacekeepers closed two border crossings between Kosovo and Serbia, due to escalating violence in the region as Serbs torched and blew up crossing points at Jarinje and Banja, saying there must be no fake borders inside Serbia.
