Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said he believes the differences between his country and Serbia will be smoothed and Belgrade is to recognize the independence of the youngest state in the world.

The statement was made at a press conference late on Monday.

Thaci has thanked especially to the US, France, Turkey and Great Britain for their support, given just hours after Kosovo proclaimed its independence.

"Kosovo already has diplomatic relations with several other countries and is on its way to be recognized by 23 EU member states," Thaci said.

"We are going to apply for a membership in all international organizations, including the UN and I am sure our flag will very soon be in the UN building," the prime minister added.

Pristina's citizens continue celebrating the historic event by rallying, dancing and waving their country's flag on the streets.
