MEXICO SHUTS OUT BULGARIA, 1-0

Francisco Gabriel scored in the 90th minute, just three minutes after entering the game, as Mexico beat Bulgaria 1-0 in an exhibition game April 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET, at Giants Stadium. Gabriel, who replaced Mexican captain Rafael Marquez, scored off Braulio Luna's header following Ramon Morales' corner kick. Among the players selected by Bulgarian football team coach Plamen Markov were Zdravko Zdravkov, Yordan Gospodinov, Georgi Peev, Mitko Trendafilov, Svetoslav Todorov. Martin Petrov was removed. Headlining the first-team roster of World Cup-bound Mexico and coach Javier Aguirre were prominent Mexican stars Cuahutemoc Blanco (Valladolid, Spain), Francisco Palencia (Espanyol, Spain), Luis Hernandez (America), and Alberto Garcia Aspe (Puebla). Mexico will be making their 14th appearance in this summer's World Cup in Japan/South Korea. The Mexicans are grouped with Croatia, Italy, and Ecuador in this summer's World Cup competition. The Bulgarian team made their second playing appearance in New York/New Jersey in less than a month, following their March 27 international friendly against Ecuador at Giants Stadium.
