UN Security Council Meets over Kosovo at Serbia's Request The secessionist Serbian province of Kosovo is expected to declare independence unilaterally on February 17.

The Security Council of the United Nations is going to hold a special closed meeting Thursday evening in anticipation of the unilateral declaration of independence of the Serbian breakaway province of Kosovo.

The meeting is convened at Serbia's special request supported by Russia. In its statement to the UN Serbia points out that Kosovo's declaration of independence would be a violation of Resolution 1244 of the Security Council which guarantees Serbian territorial integrity.

The Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic will ask the Council to do everything it could in order to prevent Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence. He expects support from a large number of the Security Council members.

Jeremic is also going to stress that the declaration of independence without Serbia's consent would mean a violation of the Serbian constitution, of international law, and of Resolution 1244, and would lead to the destabilization of the whole region.

Meanwhile, the Serbia PM Vojislav Kostunica summoned the government on Thursday at which a decision will be approved "declaring null and void all counter-legal acts of the Kosovo temporary self-government organs for unilateral declaration of independence."

The government's decision will automatically come into force in case of such an act on part of the Kosovo institutions. The decision will be approved by the Serbian parliament as well.

The secessionist Serbian province is expected to issue a declaration of separation from Serbia on February 17 amidst fireworks, concerts, and celebrations in its capital Prishtina. The factual independence is then to follow in March after the passing of a constitution and some 30 basic laws.
