Pakistani authorities have said there is still no news on its ambassador to Afghanistan who is believed to have been kidnapped on Monday.

The ambassador, Tariq Azizuddin, went missing on his way from Pakistan to Afghanistan, as officials said he never arrived at the border, BBC reported.

According to unofficial sources, a Taleban spokesman declared they were responsible for the abduction and would exchange Azizuddin for a Taleban commander captured by Pakistani security forces.

Pakistani officials said there had been no contact with the ambassador or those holding him.

Many areas in the border regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan are strongholds of pro-Taleban militants. Hundreds of people have been kidnapped in the dangerous border region in recent years, as four Pakistani Red Cross workers went missing there in the beginning of the week.
