The new Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologized to the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders for the wrongs of past governments against them.
The newly-sworn Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd pronounced a speech of apology to Australia's natives for past wrongs before Australian Parliament on Wednesday.
Rudd told Parliament it was assembled "to remove a great stain from the nation's soul" with his apology directed especially to the so called Stolen Generations - some 100 000 children removed forcibly from their parents in assimilation efforts between the 1910s and the 1970s.
"For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry", PM Rudd declared while also calling for a bipartisan effort to improve the lives of Australia's Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders.
Australia's natives have much lower life expectancy than the average for the country, and their rates of crime, alcoholism, and drug abuse are much higher.
The previous Australian government of PM John Howard refused to pronounce the same apology because if it did not want to assume responsibility for past wrongs, and because it feared compensation claims from Stolen Generations aborigines.
