Bulgaria's Academy of Sciences (BAS) re-elected academician Ivan Yuchnovski chair of the 138-year-old institution, despite brawls over the rights of the candidate to run for another mandate.

Yuchnovski gathered about 70% of the votes of the academy's assembly on Monday, being the only candidate for the position after the deputy chairman Nikola Sabotinov decided to withdraw his candidature.

Scientists previously accused Yuchnovski of attempting to occupy the position by changing the regulations of BAS, in order to have the right to run for a fourth mandate.

Despite internal regulations, the 70-year-old chair is banned by law to occupy the position, experts commented.

According to unofficial sources, discontent academicians intend to launch an appeal against the re-election of Yuchnovski by the end of the week.
