Bulgaria's police will keep its right to log Internet communication despite the protests of Internet providers and users, the State Agency for Information Technologies and Communication announced.

About 50 people rallied Thursday in Sofia to protest against the decree that allows the police to log details of all Internet, and e-mail traffic, in order to combat terrorism and serious crime, which was adopted at the end of January.

According to users, the measure violates the constitutional rights of citizens and lets governmental institutions spy on them.

The decree is related to a major EU directive and will not be abolished, officials commented.

The push for EU-wide data storage came after the Madrid bomb attacks in 2004, and intensified after the London bomb attacks in 2005.
