An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt on the territory of Strazhitsa municipality, North-eastern Bulgaria, early on Tuesday, shaking people out of bed and causing panic.

No damages or casualties were immediately reported.

The epicentre of the quake was registered 200 kilometres northeast of the capital Sofia. It struck at 7.29 am.

"The tremour, combined with a complete information blackout, caused panic among the people of Strazhitsa, who fled into the streets," mayor Stefan Stefanov told the state-run Bulgarian News Agency.

According to him the people in Strazhitsa have no one to rely on for information in case of emergency after the sole official from Civil Defence located there retired earlier this month.

In December 1986 a devastating earthquake hit the area of Strazhitsa municipality, killing two people and destroying thousands of buildings.
