More than 2000 eco-activists protested Wednesday in Sofia over the ongoing construction works in Bulgaria's natural park Rila Mountain.

The rally was staged one year after thousands of protesters signed a petition calling the parliament to accept the initially proposed plan for the Natura 2000 programme.

Areas in Rila had been excluded from the plan of the programme, which is a set of areas in the EU member states where plant and animal species and their habitats must be protected.

Currently there are three major projects for ski resorts in the mountain, which would cause irretrievable damage to Bulgaria's nature, the protesters said.

Eco activists said their protests would continue until they succeed in saving Rila from the concrete, crawling up the mountain.
