About 45% of the Bulgarians smoke, according to the preliminary results of a national study.

The research conducted in November by the National Centre of Public Health Protection under the Health Ministry shows that 46,3% of the men light up regularly, compared to 32,1% women smokers.

"Such a study has not been conducted since 2001 and the present results are alarming," Health Ministry official Masha Gavrilova said Wednesday.

The survey shows that the number of women smokers has risen up by two percent for a period of just five years, Gavrilova explained.

Bulgaria is at the top of tobacco smoking charts, as the percentage of smokers in Western Europe is about 25 %.

The country plans to raise excise duties on tobacco products by 50% in 2008, and another 50% in 2009 as part of a package of measures to discourage smoking.

Health officials announced that a total ban on smoking in enclosed public places might come into effect in Bulgaria in 2009.
