US Presidential Hopefuls Face First Real Test in Iowa

The race to be nominated as Republican and Democrat candidates for the White House is entering a key stage, with voting in the state of Iowa on Thursday evening marking the start of the election process.

At caucuses, or local meetings, across the state, voters will decide which of the contenders to back for nomination. The Republican caucuses use straw polls, while the Democrats have voters publicly divide into groups to show their support for the different candidates.

Most opinion polls suggest an extremely tight three-way race between Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards, the BBC reported.

Obama appears just ahead of Edwards, with Clinton, long considered the front-runner for the Democrat nomination, in third, according to one survey.

The same survey showed Mike Huckabee extending his lead over his nearest rival Mitt Romney for the Republicans.

With so much at stake and so little dividing the candidates, the presidential hopefuls are making final appeals for support, many of them having already spent millions to campaign in the state.

The Iowa caucuses are the first primary elections, with New Hampshire second in line next week and Michigan in mid-January.

By February 5, more than half of the US states will have voted in the primaries, including large states like Florida, California and New York.
